The College Courtyard project is the first stage in City University’s programme to reinvigorate its empty courtyard spaces. Churchman Landscape Architects won the commission to deliver an inspiring space for students and staff in six months and on a challenging budget.

The aim was to transform an inner city campus lacking dedicated outdoor space into habitat opportunities and establishing a new social space at the heart of the campus. The courtyard is dominated by the building’s elevations and by the insertion of a new performance block; it is also overlooked from the floors above.

The ground level has been transformed by a play of living and mirrored walls, sculptural seating and a suspended deck with islands of bamboo. These provide useful, restful spaces for students and staff but also provide a visual composition as the viewer moves up through the building. The living wall is planted with aromatic herbs to enliven sense of smell and taste. The performance space roof has been planted with a mosaic of woodland perennials and rock plants.
