Sustainable water use and technology has been at the heart of the development of this multi-phase residential scheme in a challenging urban context in the vicinity of the Lower Lea Valley and Canning Town Transport Interchange.

The regeneration of Rathbone Market consists of three phases which together provide a series of semi-private podium gardens, a new market square, reworking of the A13 underpass and establishment of a new arrival space referred to as ‘Phoenix Place’ connected via the market square to Barking Road. The multilevel roof line provides further amenity terraces, semi-private and private with biodiverse green roofs dedicated to enhancing local ecology.

Phase 2, Aurelia, was completed in September 2015 and delivers the bulk of the public realm including the new market square, community facilities and key pedestrian links. Innovative ‘Blue Roof’ technology was employed; making use of the extensive roof space for stormwater attenuation which in turn resulted in economies for the contractor in reduction of site excavation, and relieved pressure on congested underground services in the public realm.

Phases 1&2 - Vermillion and Aurelia were jointly recognised with a Sustainable Water Industries Group (SWIG) Award for Urban Greening in 2015.
