Our submission for the Landscape for Healthy Living international competition received a special Highly Commended award in recognition for its creativity and innovation. The judges felt that the proposal would lead to real engagement with the landscape and create a strong sense of civic pride and joy in the place.

Our proposal, The New Landscape Guides to Ebbsfleet is a glossary of words that tell of the special relationship between the people of Kent and this Garden of England, its unique chalk scars and derelict docks. The guides are aimed at a new breed of Garden City resident alongside the existing communities, and through them seek to (re)connect people to this place through the language of land and nature rather than specific or physical landscape design.

Through this approach we looked to build a deeper understanding and appreciation in the existing and new communities of the open spaces and walks within and around the Garden City. This would will a greater sense of ownership and engagement, that underpins healthier lifestyles and greater well-being. It will create a new glossary that unites the existing and new residents with a common, shared urban/rural heritage, and shared identity.
